Sara Cultural Centre
Sara Cultural Centre is a multi-purpose building in the Swedish city of Skellefteå, which acts as a theatre, library, art gallery and museum. This flexible space, featuring a unique timber-frame design, can be hired in its entirety for a big event or used for its divided spaces.
The main aim for this project was to demonstrate that it is possible to build a sustainable, large, quality building without compromising the final aesthetics of the design. The centre was also designed as an open-plan space to encourage the community to get involved in it. This innovative building was designed by Swedish architectural firm White Arkitekter, which specialises in creating environmentally friendly and socially sustainable projects.
Timber was the primary inspiration behind the design and the main material used in the project, and in fact this area of Sweden has a long tradition of timber building. The centre is currently the tallest timber building in the world (with an impressive 20 stories), something which has earned it international recognition in the field of sustainable design and has led it to win several awards including the International Award for Wood Architecture.
The Ilargi collection by LEDS C4 was used to complete the lighting aspect of this bold project, combining warmth and functional design. The main feature of this range is the elegant artisan-blown glass, which creates a soft and pleasant light that is perfect for these types of public spaces that require a warm atmosphere.
