LedsC4 cleans up 98,505 plastic bottles from seas and ports with Gravity Wave with our new lighting installation at the Grec Festival in Barcelona

The installation will be presented to the public on 29 June and will stay open throughout the Grec Festival.

The ONA lighting installation aims to raise public awareness about the importance of cleaning plastic from the sea and demonstrate how plastic can be revalued into sustainable and long-lasting products for society. The lighting project was created by our team of lighting designers. In 2023, for the fifth consecutive year, we are proud to collaborate with the Grec Festival, delivering yet again a remarkable lighting installation that reflects the festival’s annual theme.

This year’s Grec Festival centres around sustainability and the power of community, drawing inspiration from the words of renowned writer Virginia Woolf, who eloquently said, “The individual is to humanity what the wave is to the ocean.” With these two themes in mind, our team of lighting designers has created this sustainable lighting installation.

The project encourages reflection on the importance of keeping our seas and oceans free from plastic waste. As explained by the team of lighting designers themselves: “ONA (meaning ‘wave’ in Catalan) is a symbol of connection, uniting territories and strengthening the concept of community emphasised by Grec 2023.” The artistic installation will be presented to the public on 29 June and will stay open throughout the Grec Festival.

ONA . GREC

ONA creates a play of light and shadows through 14 recycled plastic panels placed along the central walkway of the Gardens of the Teatre Grec in Montjuïc, Barcelona. Conceptually, it reinterprets the shimmering light in the sea’s waves and creates the illusion of movement through pre-programmed lighting scenes projected onto the plastic panels. Each panel measures 2 metres in height by 1 metre in width, featuring green and blue tones reminiscent of fishing nets. Their translucency allows light to pass through, bringing them to life.

For this project, we have collaborated with Gravity Wave, a social initiative launched in late 2019 that has since collected over 140,000 kg of plastic waste from seas and ports, aiming to make a positive impact on the planet. For the ONA project, we have joined the #plasticfreeoceans commitment by cleaning the equivalent of 98,505 plastic bottles from the Mediterranean Sea.

Gravity Wave

Gravity Wave works with a network of traditional fishermen to clean up plastic from the sea floor, compensating them economically for each kilogram of plastic they collect. Gravity is present in more than 70 ports along the Spanish coast and in countries such as Portugal, France, Italy, Greece and Egypt.

“We are thrilled to be taking part in this inspiring project as part of the Grec Festival. The ONA lighting installation has allowed us to join forces to convey a powerful message of environmental awareness and promote positive change in our relationship with the oceans and the natural environment. We are grateful for this collaboration and excited about the impact we are making together in the fight against plastic pollution,” explained Verónica Gutiérrez, Communication Manager.

Details of the installation:
Cube Pro Linear is part of our outdoor collection. We have chosen this model to illuminate each of the 15 recycled plastic panels from bottom to top. With a width of 1 metre, it provides complete illumination for each panel. To ensure the panels’ stability, given their 2-metre height, we have created a support that seamlessly integrates with the panels, painted in the same finish as the luminaires, to prevent any movement.

To immerse the entire garden in this project, we also used the Cube outdoor collection for the pergola area and the Tron collection for the restaurant façade, both in a blue hue.
The new portable luminaire, Orbit, designed by Luca Turrini and recently presented in Milan, was chosen to illuminate the restaurant tables.
