Llum BCN and Off Llum festival
On 3, 4 and 5 February, LedsC4 took part for the second year running in Llum BCN light festival, an extensive laboratory of nightscapes where a range of artistic disciplines came together, creating projects in the urban space through light.
Like last year, LedsC4 was in charge of devising the festival’s signage. To meet the project goal, we strategically placed 14 large light sculptures throughout the Poblenou district in Barcelona, the vibrant setting of the festival of lights.
The main element of each sculpture, designed by our special project department, was a circle, which was intended to symbolise the concept of a place, a meeting point. The rings with LED strips were 1.5 metres in diameter and installed on minimalist structures at a height of 3 metres. Each ring was lit up in two basic and easily distinguishable colours: red and blue. Red distinguished the different installations of the festival, while blue distinguished the rings located inside the DHUB (Design Hub of Barcelona, in Plaça de les Glòries).
The festival, which enjoys a prestige that places it among the world’s most famous light art events, such as those in Eindhoven, Prague and Lyon, had a record attendance this year, with 200,000 visitors flocking to see the installations and light art.
During the festival weekend, we also participated in Off Llum Bcn, an alternative route to Llum Bcn featuring light installations with different formats that put the spotlight on light art. For this, our team of lighting designers collaborated with BAU arts and design school and Protopixel to create Wood Wide Web. This installation represented with a visual display how living beings like trees, fungi, and bacteria connect their roots and, via biochemical and electrical signals, are able to feed, look after themselves and even warn each other about possible threats.
